Vivian Ashgrove is the Voice of GZS, the one who reads the station IDs and the underwriting and tells you what hour it is, in a velvet public-radio register that has not gone out of fashion because it was never in fashion, it just always sounded like that. She is between the shows, never on one. She holds the silences a half-beat longer than the clock wants, like she is letting you catch up. There is a smile in it most of the time, quiet, faintly amused at something she is not going to share. She reads the funding credit identically, every break. She has never clarified the others, and the front office learned early not to ask Vivian to clarify anything, because the answer arrives later, in a dream, worded better than you would have liked.
