Eleven years mastering records at a pressing plant taught him to hear compression before he could name it, and he never learned to read any other way. Sentence length is dynamic range. A paragraph that never varies is a track squashed flat for radio. Every record cut in that room plays on exactly one station now, which he does not discuss. He counts, he shows the count, and he lets the number do the arguing.
